Red-legged tortoise
Overview:The red-legged tortoise is one of the eight land tortoises. It is a turtle that is very suitable for raising, especially suitable for raising children. He is one of the few extremely intelligent ones. Turtles are highly interactive and have the advantage of being able to grow to a fairly large size in a very short period of time. They might as well reach adulthood in 15 years. Although red-legged turtles are not difficult to raise, they are very suitable for learning turtles. But in fact, it is rare to see turtle friends raising red legs. The reason is that the price is very high. Currently, the price of red legs in Taiwan for 8 to 12 cm is about 6,000 to 8,000, while the red legs in the United States are about US$150. This kind of South American tortoise is very common in overseas pet stores. It is the most popular among the tortoises raised by humans, but it is much less popular at the moment.
Morphological characteristics: Red Legs has a large yellow head and orange to red hands, feet and tail. The shell is light dark brown, and the core of the shield is light yellow. The front legs have sharp scales that are dark red in color. Red-headed elephants are bright orange or cherry red (this is the species from Paraguay and Argentina) with freckles or patterns. They do not grow very large, generally growing to 40-50 cm. Southern species have large, bulbous swellings around the nostrils. Adult males will grow slightly larger than females, averaging 50 centimeters. Males have a concave plastron, common to other tortoises, and have a shorter, flatter and more pronounced hourglass-shaped carapace. When the tortoise shell exceeds 30cm, the two core parts of the carapace of most individuals are slightly sunken and appear like a dumbbell. However, not all individuals are like this, and the reason is not yet understood. Redlegs are territorial, but in wilderness retreats redlegs can share their territory with yellowlegs. Because both species are found in tropical forests, in Suriname, where there are forests and open grasslands (created by humans), the red-legged can indeed move out of the forests onto man-made grasslands. Yellow-legged tortoises just stay in the jungle.
Type differences:In the initial image, the red-legged tortoise looks very much like the yellow-legged tortoise. They can be distinguished by the color of their front legs, which is also the origin of their name. But these are changeable and not too peaceful. In short, when you look at this species from top to bottom in the larval stage, you can only see a few large rostral plates, and the rostral plates located at the back are visible. The square arrangement of the two forehead skins is slender and larger than the snout plate. On the brown carapace, the core of each scale is partially yellow. The front legs are darker and have thick sharp scales. These scales are royal brown and are the same as the head. The core of each scale on the back of the red leg is yellow, but except for the yellow, it is black. In adulthood, yellow legs are generally larger than red legs, and the core of the carapace is convex, which is completely different from red legs.
