Neapolitan Mastiff (Definite Introduction)
The ideal male Neapolitan Mastiff should be 26-31 inches tall at the withers, and the ideal female dog should be 24-29 inches tall at the withers. The ideal balanced weight of an adult male dog should be about 150 pounds and that of a female dog about 110 pounds. However, the general weight is larger than this number. As long as the ratio and function are not affected, the larger the weight, the better.
The Neapolitan Mastiff gives people the impression of being thick, heavy-boned, tall and rectangular in proportion. The length of the body is about 10%-15% longer than the width.
The head is large relative to the body. What makes it different from other mastiffs is that it has many wrinkles and drooping lips, blending into rich dewlaps. The upper line of the skull and the mouth must be parallel. The face is made of thick folds and creases. The necessary creases are from the outer edge of the eyelid to the throat, and from the lower part and bottom of the lip to the outer edge of the lip.
Sad when you rest, alert when threatened. Vision is sharp. The eyes are deep, almost hidden by the drooping upper eyelids. The lower eyelids droop, showing instantaneous pain. The length of the dog, that is, the length from the shoulder to the hip, is 10-15% greater than the height of the dog, that is, the height from the highest point of the shoulder to the ground. The depth of the thorax is half the height of the dog. The ribs are long and elastic.
The back is broad and healthy. The highest part of the scapula rises almost above a healthy, level topline.
The tail is slightly shorter than the topline, wide and thick at the base, gradually tapering to the top. 1/3 of the tail should be docked. The remainder of the tail hangs straight or in a slight "S" shape. When in motion, the tail is carried level or slightly above the topline.
The coat is short, dense, and has a general length and smoothness all over the body. The hair is straight and no longer than 1 inch long. No need for edges.
The behavior of the Neapolitan Mastiff is not elegant, but it is quite gentle and clumsy. Common gaits include walk, trot, gallop and walk. The stride is long and elastic, and at the same time very powerful, especially the long propulsion from the rear to the forelegs. There is a sway and swing of the body in all gaits. No points will be deducted for walking slowly while showing. A slight paddle-like movement of the front legs is normal. The head is raised slightly above the back.
